More rankings for this university

Colgate University, a private liberal arts college located in Hamilton, New York, was founded in 1819 as the Baptist Education Society of the State of New York. Initially, it operated under this name until 1823 when it became known as the Hamilton Theological and Literary Institution, commonly referred to as Hamilton College (1823–1846). In 1846, the institution was renamed Madison College and, finally, it adopted its current name, Colgate University, in 1890.

With an enrollment of about 3,200 students, Colgate offers 56 undergraduate majors leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree. The student body consists of 54% female and 46% male students, who engage in more than 200 clubs and organisations. While Colgate primarily focuses on undergraduate education, it also offers a small graduate program leading to a Master of Arts in Teaching. The college competes in NCAA Division I athletics, participating in the Patriot League and ECAC Hockey.

Coeducation

Initially, the institution was exclusively all-male, but women began attending in limited roles as early as the mid-1800s. Emily Taylor, the daughter of President Stephen W. Taylor (1851–56), participated in her father's moral philosophy class, marking one of the earliest instances of female involvement at the school.

The first full-time female student was Mabel Dart (later Colegrove), who attended classes from 1878 to 1882. However, due to concerns about the potential embarrassment of a woman graduating from an all-male college, university officials arranged for Dart to receive her degree from Vassar College, which was all-female at the time. In subsequent years, more women began participating in courses, including the wives of veterans and faculty members after World War II. Colgate officially became a coeducational institution in 1970.

Colgate University is still awaiting its official rankings from prominent organisations such as QS and Times Higher Education. Despite its growing reputation and contributions to academia, the university has not yet been featured in the rankings published by these influential bodies.

Although the university continues to develop its academic programs and research initiatives, it remains unranked by these major international ranking institutions. The absence of a ranking from QS and Times Higher Education does not reflect the quality of education or research output but simply indicates that the university has not been formally assessed by these specific agencies.
