Quinnipiac University is a private institution located in Hamden, Connecticut, United States. The university offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees and is home to the well-known Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.
The origins of Quinnipiac University date back to 1929 when it was established by Samuel W. Tator, a business professor and politician. Phillip Troup, a Yale College graduate and one of the co-founders, served as the university's first president until his passing in 1939. Irmagarde Tator, Samuel Tator's wife and a Mount Holyoke College alumna, significantly contributed to the university's early development, serving as its first bursar. Other key founders included E. Wight Bakke, who later became an economics professor at Yale, and Robert R. Chamberlain, a furniture company executive.
Campus
Quinnipiac University comprises three campuses: the Mount Carmel Campus in Hamden near Mount Carmel Avenue, the York Hill Campus off Sherman Avenue in Hamden, and the North Haven Campus in North Haven, just north of New Haven, Connecticut. The oldest of these, the Mount Carmel Campus, is situated at the base of Sleeping Giant State Park. This campus houses key university facilities, including the Arnold Bernhard Library, the Carl Hansen Student Center, university administration offices, and many student residences. The Mount Carmel Campus is also recognized as a census-designated place (CDP), first appearing in the 2020 Census with a recorded population of 3,639.
Located about half a mile from the Mount Carmel Campus, the York Hill Campus sits atop a hill and features state-of-the-art facilities. The development of this campus began with the construction of the M&T Bank Arena (formerly People’s United Arena) and later expanded significantly in 2010. As part of a $300 million development project, new residence halls, a student center, and additional parking were added to the 250-acre (1.0 km²) campus. York Hill is designed as an environmentally conscious "green" campus, incorporating renewable energy resources, including one of the first wind farms implemented on a university campus.
