The University of Fribourg is a public institution located in Fribourg, Switzerland. Its origins date back to 1580 when the renowned Jesuit Peter Canisius established the Collège Saint-Michel in the city. Later, in 1763, the state of Fribourg founded a law academy, which eventually became the foundation for the university’s present law faculty. The official creation of the University of Fribourg came in 1889, following an Act passed by the parliament of the Swiss Canton of Fribourg.
