Classified as an "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity" institution, UNF is currently led by President Moez Limayem.
Established in 1965, UNF began offering classes in 1972, initially serving as an upper-division college for juniors and seniors. Freshmen were first admitted in 1984. Organized into six colleges, five of which provide undergraduate and graduate degree programs, the university is known for its strong programs in business, coastal biology, nursing, nutrition, and music. While most students live off campus, there are six areas of on-campus housing. In 2006, UNF's Social Sciences building became the first LEED-certified facility in northeast Florida and the university’s first "green" building. By 2010, five campus buildings had earned U.S. Green Building Council certifications.

At the heart of the university is The Green, a spacious grassy area popular among students for relaxation and events.
Spanning 1,300 acres (5.3 km²), the UNF campus includes a state-protected wildlife and bird sanctuary, complete with miles of nature trails, lakes, and ponds. The Social Sciences building, which opened in fall 2006, was the first facility in Northeast Florida to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification and became the campus's first “green” building. It earned the 2007 Award of Excellence for University Building from the Southeast Construction Company. Additionally, in 2007, the university introduced a shuttle service to connect key campus locations, including dormitories, UNF Hall, the parking lots, the Carpenter Library, and the UNF Arena.
